Civic polls in Kolkata: TMC candidate list deleted, 39 councilors dropped

TRINAMOOL Congress (TMC) announced its slate of candidates for the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) election on December 19 on Friday. No less than 39 of the 126 neighborhood coordinators (councilors) were withdrawn.

The TMC, however, has apparently deviated from its “one man, one job” policy. In addition, several family members of party leaders, including Kajori Banerjee, the sister-in-law of TMC leader Mamata Banerjee, are on the list. Kajori is the wife of Mamata’s brother, Kartik Banerjee.

The announcement of the list came after a three-hour meeting at Mamata Banerjee’s residence. TMC deputy Sudip Bandyopadhyay said after the meeting: “In the last elections 126 candidates from our party won. Among them, 87 candidates were selected and 39 abandoned. However, out of 87, 78 applicants will compete from their old neighborhoods and others will have to change neighborhood for various reasons.

Party sources said two candidates had not yet been finalized and would be done in two or three days.

The MP added: “We have focused on increasing the number of women candidates. Out of 144 candidates, 45%, or 64, are women. We have made sure that all sections of society are represented. In our list, 19 belong to the listed castes and 23 to minority communities.

Even though party sources said after the meeting that the official list of candidates would be announced in half an hour, it took the party more than three more hours to do so. TMC sources said that within the party the removal of 39 sitting advisers and the arrival of new faces was seen as a “strong exercise”.
